On the journey of life, we not only seek happiness but also shape it ourselves. The meaning of happiness is a personal masterpiece, painted with unique strokes.
Back in Mexico, one might say Alberto had a 'successful' life, owning a thriving business in the automotive industry for over a decade and travelling to different places in the world. Alberto, however, would say he is immensely grateful for his simpler life in Canada today.
"Gratitude is the secret to a joyful life. Focusing on what you have and can do changes how you see the world and inspires you to live each day to the fullest."
PART 1: Alberto at ARSGEM
Briefly introduce yourself: what your role is at ARSGEM and how long you've been at ARSGEM.
I am an emergency technician, working in all sorts of emergencies such as fire, water, and asbestos. I have been with ARSGEM for almost 3 years now.
What are some unique parts of your role that people might not know about?
Every situation is drastically different, so there is no such thing as a cookie-cutter solution. While fundamental principles apply across the board, their application must be adapted to consider factors like age of the property, construction materials, industry, property management, and surrounding context. Here's an example: Recently, we faced two emergencies that appeared quite similar at first glance. However, one required a more detailed response, leading us to double the number of technicians on-site. It's vital to assess the situation quickly and correctly before it escalates. Delays or misjudgments can lead to expensive damages.
How do you measure success in your role?
It might sound ironic, but I know I've done a great job when I don't hear from our customers. In the restoration industry, clients typically reach out only when something goes wrong. So, when the work is completed and there's no follow-up, it means their operations have returned to normal smoothly.
What are the most critical skills needed to excel in your position?
First, flexibility is a must. This is one of the unique aspects of the emergency management industry—emergencies don't take holidays. They can strike at any moment, and you need to be ready to respond whenever needed. Being part of a team helps me maintain a balance between work and rest, but at the end of the day, one thing remains constant: unpredictability is at the heart of emergency management. Second, you need to have great communication skills. Since restorative work is team-driven, communicating effectively is critical. Being a team player, with a mindset that prioritizes collective victory over individual success, is essential. To excel as a restorative technician, you must actively listen, cooperate, and provide support to your teammates.
